Welcome to Nakuru

A practical Rift Valley town and the gateway to Lake Nakuru National Park, a compact, fenced park with rhino, big cats and, when conditions suit, flamingos in numbers. The escarpment views on the drive in are part of the appeal.

Make Nakuru work for you

Highlights

  • Both black and white rhino, with sightings more reliable here than in most Kenyan parks
  • Flamingos when water levels and algae suit — spectacular in a good year, absent in others
  • Rothschild's giraffe, translocated here and now well established
  • Baboon Cliff and Out of Africa lookouts over the lake and the Rift floor
  • Menengai Crater just outside town, a large caldera with walking and views

Getting around

  • Two to three hours by road from Nairobi on the main Rift Valley route.
  • The park is compact enough to cover thoroughly in a day.
  • A vehicle with reasonable clearance is sensible; the park roads are variable after rain.

Good to know

  • Two to three days including the park and the crater.
  • Do not plan the trip around flamingos. Lake levels have varied enormously and the birds move between Rift Valley lakes.
  • It pairs naturally with Naivasha for a Rift Valley loop from Nairobi.
  • Rising lake levels have submerged some old park roads and infrastructure — check current access.

Standard park rules — stay in the vehicle, keep your distance from rhino and buffalo. In town, ordinary urban precautions after dark.

Before you book

Nakuru questions, answered

Will I see flamingos?

Sometimes, in very large numbers. But they follow the algae, and rising water has pushed them to other lakes in recent years. Treat it as a bonus, not the reason to come.

Is it worth it for rhino?

Yes. It is one of the more dependable places in Kenya to see both black and white rhino, and the park is small enough to search properly in a day.
