Make Nyerere work for you

Highlights

  • Boat safaris on the Rufiji, a genuinely different way to see wildlife from a vehicle
  • Walking safaris, permitted here in a way they are not in most northern parks
  • Large elephant and buffalo populations, and one of the more important remaining wild dog ranges
  • Riverine lakes and channels that concentrate game in the dry months
  • Very few other vehicles, even in peak season

Getting around

  • Light aircraft from Dar es Salaam is the usual approach, around an hour.
  • By road it is a long, rough journey — flying is what most visitors do.
  • Camps run boats, vehicles and walking safaris; you work from your camp.

Good to know

  • Three to five nights. Getting there takes effort, so do not make it a single night.
  • June to October is the dependable window. Some camps close during the long rains.
  • Do at least one boat safari and one walk — they are the reason to come here rather than go north.
  • It is hot and humid; pack accordingly and expect tsetse in some areas.

Walking safaris put you on foot among big game — listen to the armed guide and walk in the order you are placed. Crocodile and hippo make the river genuinely dangerous; stay in the boat.
