Make Nanyuki work for you

Highlights

  • Mount Kenya, whether you climb it, walk the lower slopes, or simply watch it from a verandah
  • Laikipia conservancies, among the strongest community and private conservation models in the country
  • Ol Pejeta, where the last northern white rhinos are held and the conservation story is told honestly
  • Ranch stays, riding and walking safaris — a different pace from vehicle-based game viewing
  • The equator itself, which the town sits astride and makes a modest fuss about

Getting around

  • Roughly three to four hours by road from Nairobi, or a short flight to the local airstrip.
  • A vehicle is useful; the conservancies are spread out and taxis between them are not a practical option.
  • Mount Kenya climbs start from several routes — the trailhead you use determines your approach.

Good to know

  • Two to four nights for conservancies and the mountain's lower slopes; six or more for a summit attempt.
  • Pack properly for cold. Visitors routinely underestimate highland nights here.
  • Altitude is real on Mount Kenya. Any summit plan needs acclimatisation days built in, not bolted on.
  • Book conservancy activities ahead; several cap numbers deliberately.

Altitude sickness is the main risk on the mountain and is not related to fitness — ascend slowly and descend if symptoms appear. On the conservancies, follow guide instructions on foot; walking safaris put you on the animals' terms.

Nanyuki questions, answered

Do I need to climb to make it worthwhile?

No. Many people come for the conservancies, the ranch stays and the mountain views without ever going above the forest.

How long does Mount Kenya take?

Point Lenana, the trekking summit, typically takes four to six days depending on route and acclimatisation. The technical peaks require climbing experience.
