Make Kisumu work for you

Highlights

  • Lake Victoria sunsets, best taken from a boat on the water
  • Dunga Beach and the fishing community, where the day's catch comes in and is cooked on the spot
  • Kit Mikayi, a striking rock formation west of the city with real significance in Luo tradition
  • Impala Sanctuary, a small reserve on the lakeshore within the city
  • Kisumu Museum for the regional history and Luo cultural context

Getting around

  • Short flights from Nairobi, or a long day by road.
  • Boda-bodas and tuk-tuks handle city trips; agree fares first.
  • Boat trips leave from Dunga and the main jetties.

Good to know

  • Two to three days covers the city and its immediate surroundings comfortably.
  • Try tilapia and omena — the lake food here is the point, not a side note.
  • It is hotter and more humid than visitors expect coming from Nairobi.
  • Take antimalarial advice seriously; the lake basin is a higher-risk area than the highlands.

Take malaria prophylaxis advice seriously in the lake basin. Avoid swimming in the lake near settlements, and use boats with life jackets aboard.

Kisumu questions, answered

Can I swim in Lake Victoria?

It is generally not advised near the city because of bilharzia and water quality. Boat trips are the usual way to enjoy the lake.

Why come to Kisumu?

For the lake, the food and a side of Kenya most itineraries skip entirely. It is a cultural and culinary trip rather than a wildlife one.
