Kigali
A green, creative and thoughtfully connected city among Rwanda’s hills.
Welcome to Kigali
Spread across hills and notably clean, orderly and safe, Kigali is unlike any other capital in the region. The Genocide Memorial is essential and difficult; beyond it there is a serious coffee culture, a growing arts scene and some of the easiest city navigation in Africa.
Make Kigali work for you
Highlights
- The Kigali Genocide Memorial, where more than 250,000 people are buried - sobering, essential, and very well done
- Kimironko Market for produce, fabric and the everyday life of the city
- A genuinely good specialty coffee scene built on Rwandan beans
- Inema Arts Centre and the contemporary galleries around it
- Nyamirambo, the oldest and liveliest quarter, best seen on a community walking tour
Getting around
- Kigali International is close to the centre - one of the shortest airport runs in the region.
- Ride-hailing and moto-taxis are cheap, and motos supply helmets as a matter of course.
- The city is hilly; walking is pleasant but steeper than it looks on a map.
- It is the natural base for onward travel to Volcanoes National Park and Lake Kivu.
Good to know
- Two to four days, more if you are using it as a base for the rest of the country.
- Give the Genocide Memorial a proper half-day, and do not plan something light immediately after it.
- Plastic bags are banned nationwide - they will be taken at the airport.
- Roads and signage are good by regional standards, which makes self-driving realistic here.
- The last Saturday morning of the month is Umuganda community work, when much of the city closes.
Kigali is unusually safe by any standard. Be respectful at the Genocide Memorial - photography is restricted in places and the site is an active burial ground. Note the nationwide plastic bag ban.
Kigali area by area
Nyarutarama & Kacyiru - quiet, upmarket, most of the embassies and better hotels
Kiyovu - central, walkable, close to restaurants and the city centre
Nyamirambo - the oldest quarter, liveliest and most characterful
Remera - near the airport and the stadium, practical for short stays
Kigali questions, answered
Is Kigali safe?
It is consistently regarded as one of the safest capitals in Africa, including at night. Normal precautions still apply, but the difference is noticeable.
How long do I need?
Two days for the city itself. Longer if you are combining it with Volcanoes National Park or Lake Kivu, for which it is the natural base.
