Welcome to Entebbe

A calm, green town on a Lake Victoria peninsula where Uganda's international airport sits. Far more pleasant than a typical airport town, with botanical gardens, lakeside stays and chimpanzee sanctuary access - a sensible first or last night in the country.

Make Entebbe work for you

Highlights

  • Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a boat trip out onto the lake to a genuine rescue facility
  • Entebbe Botanical Gardens, laid out over a century ago and full of birdlife
  • The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, considerably better than the zoo it used to be
  • Lakeside beaches and sunsets, with far less bustle than Kampala
  • Mabamba Swamp nearby, one of the most reliable places anywhere to see the shoebill

Getting around

  • The international airport is in the town itself, which is the main practical advantage.
  • Everything in town is a short taxi or boda ride.
  • Boats to Ngamba and Mabamba leave from the lakeshore and are arranged in advance.
  • Kampala is an hour or more away by road depending on traffic.

Good to know

  • One to three days, most naturally at the start or end of a Uganda trip.
  • Mabamba for shoebill is an early start - the birds and the light are both better first thing.
  • Staying in Entebbe rather than Kampala before an early flight saves a stressful drive.
  • It is noticeably calmer than Kampala; some visitors prefer it as a base entirely.

Calm and low-key by regional standards. On the lake, check that boats carry life jackets - squalls on Lake Victoria can rise quickly.
