Diani Beach
Powder-white sand, warm water and easy Indian Ocean adventure.
Welcome to Diani Beach
A long, exceptionally white stretch of sand on the south coast, with a reef close enough to snorkel and warm water all year. Diani does slow beach days and genuine ocean adventure equally well, and the sacred Kaya forests behind it are a short detour inland.
Indian Ocean adventuresBeach time, your way
Base yourself along the white-sand shoreline, then choose a slow beach day, a reef and dhow excursion, or a nature detour to the sacred Kaya Kinondo forest.

Make Diani Beach work for you
Highlights
- Reef snorkelling and diving a short boat ride offshore, with strong visibility outside the rainy months
- Dhow sailing, including day trips south towards Wasini and the Kisite marine park for dolphins
- Reliable cross-shore wind from roughly June to September and December to March — one of the region's better kitesurfing coasts
- Kaya Kinondo, a sacred coastal forest visited with a local guide who explains its meaning rather than just its trees
- Colobus monkeys along the beach road, with rope bridges strung above it to keep them off the tarmac
Getting around
- Ukunda airstrip is minutes from the beach and connects to Nairobi and Mombasa by light aircraft.
- By road from Mombasa the Likoni crossing is the variable — the ferry queue can add substantially at peak times.
- Tuk-tuks handle short hops along the beach road; agree the fare before you set off.
- A hired car or driver makes sense if you plan several excursions rather than one.
Good to know
- Tides matter more here than most beaches. Low tide exposes the reef flat and changes swimming completely — check the day's times.
- Three to six nights suits Diani: enough for beach days and two or three excursions without cramming.
- Book boat trips through your stay or an established operator, and confirm sea conditions the evening before.
- Reef shoes are worth packing for rocky sections and the exposed flat at low water.
- This is a conservative coast — beachwear on the beach, cover up in villages and towns.
Swim where others swim and ask locally about currents, particularly around channels in the reef. Use licensed dive and boat operators and check that safety equipment is aboard before departing.
Diani Beach area by area
Diani Beach Road — the main strip, closest to restaurants, dive centres and nightlife
Galu Beach — quieter sand just south, better for long walks and slower stays
Tiwi — north of Diani, low-key and less developed, popular for self-catering
Ukunda — the inland town where the airstrip, markets and everyday services are
Diani Beach questions, answered
When is the water clearest?
January to March and July to October generally give the best visibility. April and May are the wettest and the sea is often stirred up.
Can I swim at any tide?
Not everywhere. At low tide the reef flat is exposed along much of the beach. Check tide times on arrival and plan swims around them.
How do I get here from Nairobi?
Fly to Ukunda in about an hour, or to Mombasa and drive south — the latter includes the Likoni ferry crossing.
