Welcome to Bwindi

Ancient montane rainforest on Uganda's western edge, holding roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas. Trekking here is strenuous, strictly permitted and limited by design, and it is the reason most visitors come to Uganda at all.

Best timeJun–Sep; Dec–Feb
Ideal stay3–4 nights
ClimateCool, wet and misty at altitude - it is called Impenetrable for a reason. Rain is possible in any month; drier spells around June to September and December to February.

Make Bwindi work for you

Highlights

  • Mountain gorilla trekking, in small permitted groups with an hour at the gorillas
  • Gorilla habituation experiences in some sectors, which allow considerably longer
  • Exceptional forest birding, including many Albertine Rift endemics
  • Batwa cultural experiences, told by the forest's displaced original inhabitants
  • Forest walks and waterfalls for anyone not trekking on a given day

Getting around

  • A long drive from Kampala, or a light aircraft to Kihihi or Kisoro followed by a road transfer.
  • Bwindi has several trekking sectors, a long way apart by road - book accommodation in the sector your permit is for.
  • A 4x4 is necessary; the roads in are steep and often wet.

Good to know

  • Three to four nights, allowing a spare day in case of weather or a second trek.
  • Permits are limited, allocated in advance and sell out well ahead. Secure yours before anything else.
  • The trek can be several hours of steep, muddy climbing. Reasonable fitness matters more than people expect.
  • Waterproofs, gaiters, gardening gloves for grabbing vegetation, and boots with real grip.
  • Porters are available and hiring one supports the local community directly - take one.

Trekking rules exist to protect the gorillas from human disease as much as to protect you - keep the required distance, do not go if you are unwell, and follow your guide exactly. Check current permit requirements and health rules before travelling.

Before you book

Bwindi questions, answered

How hard is the trek?

Variable and often hard - anywhere from one to seven hours of steep, muddy, dense forest walking. Fitness genuinely matters. Porters make an enormous difference.

Am I guaranteed to see gorillas?

Habituated family groups are tracked daily and success rates are very high, but these are wild animals in dense forest and nothing is absolutely certain.

When should I book?

As far ahead as you can. Permit numbers are deliberately capped and peak dates go early.
